SPECIAL NOTE RE: SPIRIT OF 1848 LISTSERV TRANSITION TO GOOGLEGROUPS
STARTING MONDAY, JANUARY 20, 2020 ALL LISTSERV POSTS SHOULD BE SEND TO SPIRITOF1848@GOOGLEGROUPS.COM!
SPIRIT OF 1848 LISTSERV/EMAIL BULLETIN BOARD TRANSITION: On Monday, October 28, 2019, we gradually started migrating all Spirit of 1848 YahooGroups subscribers to the newly created Spirit of 1848 GoogleGroups listserv.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU: If you are a member of the Spirit of 1848 ListServe and do not start receiving messages from our GoogleGroups account as of January 20, 2020, please send a subscribe message to email@example.com.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO: Discontinue sending posts to the YahooGroups address.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I ACCIDENTALLY DELETE REVELANT EMAILS FROM GOOGLEGROUPS?: You can always find information about the transition and the address to join the listserv here.
DO I NEED TO HAVE/NEED TO CREATE A GOOGLE ACCOUNT? No, you do not need to have a Google account in order to be a member of the 1848 GoogleGroups listserv just as you did not need to have a Yahoo account to be a member of the 1848 listserv at YahooGroups. However, you may need to create a GoogleGroups account in order to switch to Digest mode.
WHY WAS THE MIGRATION GRADUAL? GoogleGroups limits how many addresses can be added to a new Google group every day. Since we have ~4000 subscribers, this meant we had to pace the work accordingly.
WHY DID WE LEAVE YAHOOGROUPS? We learned, on October 16, 2019, that YahooGroups would be ending some of it hosting services as of October 21, 2019, and would be deleting all archived materials as of December 14, 2019. We have consulted with other groups and colleagues in the same situation, and the consensus seems to be that Yahoo Groups is heading towards being permanently shut down, and that GoogleGroups is a viable option. Accordingly, to be prudent, we took steps to switch to a new platform before we are forced to do so, and we archived all of our previous emails (dating back to 1999).
THE SPIRIT OF 1848 LISTSERV:
The Spirit of 1848 e-mail community serves an activist network of people concerned about social inequalities in health, in the US and other countries. Linking politics, passion, and public health, we are organized as an official Caucus of the American Public Health Association. Our work focuses on: politics of public health data; curriculum and progressive pedagogy; e-networking; and progressive public health history.
We welcome posting on social justice & public health that provide:
a) information (e.g. about conferences or job announcements or publications relevant to and making explicit links between social justice & public health), and
b) substantive queries or comments directly addressing issues relevant to and making explicit links between social justice and public health.
Please do not post messages that are ONLY about social justice/political issues or ONLY about public health issues that do not explicitly connect issues of social justice & public health.
Please do not post petitions containing text suggesting (or requesting) that signatures should be sent to the Spirit of 1848 bulletin board, as the signatures & replies clog up the works. Instead, if you have a petition you want to circulate, please post a notice about the petition (which can include its text) and provide YOUR email address so people can email you with their signature and/or get a copy of the petition that is to be signed (or else provide the email address and/or website where people should send their signature and/or get a copy of the petition).
Also, to limit e-mail volume, please do not send posts directed toward a single individual to the list at large.

MEMBERSHIP IN THE SPIRIT OF 1848 CAUCUS:
For those of you who are dues-paying members of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and also members of the Listserv, we ask you to take TWO STEPS to affirm your membership in the Spirit of 1848 Caucus so that we can provide an accurate count to APHA of the number of Spirit of 1848 members who are currently dues-paying members of APHA:
STEP 1: Take 30 seconds to fill out this tiny form here that simply asks for your name, email address, and APH membership number.
STEP 2: Update your APHA membership profile to flag your membership in the Spirit of 1848 Caucus:
1) Login in at: http://apha.org/
2) Click on the bottom part of where your name shows up, which will reveal the "Menu" for options
3) Click on “Update Profile”
4) Click on the tab for “Communities”
5) Scroll down to “Caucuses,” go to “Spirit of 1848,” and choose the option for “Current Participant”!
By ensuring that your APHA membership profile indicates that you consider yourself to be a member of the Spirit of 1848 Caucus and by completing our survey, we can be sure to provide APHA with the information we need to maintain our Caucus status in APHA.
As for why we are asking you to do this:
a) We consider everyone who joins the Spirit of 1848 listserve to be a member of the Spirit of 1848. As is made clear by our mission statement, we are NOT a dues-paying organization, and count as members instead people who elect to participate in Spirit of 1848 activities, one of which is to enroll in our listserve. We do not require or expect Spirit of 1848 members to be dues-paying members of APHA, but also recognize that many Spirit of 1848 members are also APHA members.
b) Periodically, as a condition of being a Caucus officially in affiliation with APHA, we are required to provide APHA with a list of Spirit of 1848 members who are also dues-paying members of APHA.
We affirm that:
a) the list compiled via this survey (administered via Qualtrics) will reside on a secure server in a password protected file that can be accessed only by the Spirit of 1848 Coordinating Committee members who run the Spirit of 1848 listserve, and
b) the list will be shared SOLELY with APHA, and the personal identifying information included on the list is information individuals would already have shared with APHA when they enroll as a dues-paying member.
Many thanks in advance for helping us to maintain our status as a Caucus officially recognized to be in affiliation with APHA!
